My instructional illustration is based on raising your own homemade plant. The plant is a bell pepper, and my reasoning for choosing that is because it’s easy to get a hold of one and try this out in your everyday household. I have six distinct steps for instructions, with accompanying imagery made by myself.
The title of the illustration is in a font called “Houseplant DEMO”, and I feel it suits this planting illustration as the style of the font has a “DIY” feel to me. The titles for the steps are in a font called “Mystery Quest”, and my reasoning is that the fancy serifs on the letters reminds me of a budding seed. This also gives a whimsical, nice feeling to the piece in my opinion. Both are in yellow to properly contrast the green backgrounds. The font for the body text is in plain Arial for clarity.
Overall, my color choices of Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red corresponds to the coloration of the star of my piece, the bell pepper. I added two distinct backgrounds on top of the main dark green background to nicely separate them in two. The second rectangle background in particular is more yellowish to simulate these steps requiring you to make sure the plant is in a well-lit environment like sunlight. The title has two leaf-like shapes in the same shade of green as the first rectangle background for more décor. Finally, the illustrations are hand-drawn by me to give it the same style.
