This is my design layout project about the designer of my choosing, Phyllis K. Robinson of Doyle Dane Bernbach. My research led me to learn that she is the first female Copy Chief in U.S. history, and is responsible for some of DDB’s famous successful pieces. What I am a fan of the most if her campaign for Levy’s Real Jewish Rye. Its broke borders on what certain races like and I would love to honor that by making her profile photo on my poster represent that very advertisement. My title is “You don’t have to be a designer to love Robinson.” In Cooper Black font like the original rye poster.
Phyllis Robinson’s photo in the center is accompanied by one of her famous quotes, “We throw out the rules every day and make up our own!” divided in half to fill the negative space behind her. My goal for the upper half of the page is to make it have a “casually speaking to the reader” feel to it like most of Robinson’s work.
I noticed that her famous work came out in the 1900s when color in newspaper was not common yet. So, I tried to emulate that by having the entire piece be black and white, with paper-like texture to simulate something found in an old newspaper. The font used is Calibri, a substitute of the Futura font DDB uses for their body texts. I did my best arranging the synopsis and the images of her work to a nice balance within a self-made grid.
All images are photos of Robinson with layouts of her work. The point of this project is to make a spread in the style of the designer of my choosing and talk about their life and work.
